$35 Can Change Everything
35 snazzy vintage accessories under $35
Nora and I bumped into each other on the raw silk side of eBay the other day — I don’t know if she came out of the hole with any new treasures, but I managed to low-ball offer my way into this baby:
It checks all the boxes I didn’t know I had:
Hexagonal half-moon silhouette
Textured raw silk with an alien-esque metallic sheen
Color-blocked cobalt and violet swirled into a euphoric rosette
It’s unbranded and in perfect condition, but based on the design, my guess is 1980s — though it just as well could have been a 2000s does ‘80s situation and lived its former life slung over a girl’s shoulder at the junior prom.
I recently found myself in the dressing predicament fashion magazines used to tirelessly warn us about: I had to go day-to-night. Sun-soaked and sticky with a film of sunscreen across my chest, I had only a 15-minute window at home to change for a friend’s birthday dinner.
So I body-showered and reached for the only thing I felt I could stand wearing — a white cotton mini dress and loose denim shorts. Chosen because every square inch of fabric stays a respectable millimeter away from my damp torso in anticipation of the muggy journey to Brooklyn ahead. It’s only through breezy linens that one is able to traverse the L train tunnels in July with their sanity still in tact.
But a nearly shapeless white sack doesn’t feel particularly celebratory, and a birthday deserves a hit of color, so I grabbed the fresh-from-the-post raw silk rosette and was reminded of a valuable lesson:
$35 can change everything!
Or less, as was this eBay coup. A funky vintage accessory can transform an outfit from fine to fab; take a plain dress from sack to swanky; elevate a look’s mood from tired to wired. A cheap vintage accessory is one of the few things I’ll impulse buy on occasion because the risk is so low and the reward potential is sooooo addictively high.
