Happy Halloween! I come to you with a holiday offering — more than 70 bewitching Sabrina Spellman-inspired secondhand finds. Inspired by my trip inside of Sabrina’s comic book world, I present some perfect pieces to wear to your next seance.

live shot of when i told sabrina about ebay and blew her mind

Sabrina’s style — which evolved with her from ‘60s Archie’s Comics to her own series in the ‘70s to sitcom fame in the ‘90s and a Netflix adaptation in 2018 — has maintained a lot of the same staples through the decades. Sabrina in all iterations is partial to mini skirts, knee-high leather boots, funky coats, short-sleeved sweaters, collared tops, and, of course, that classic black headband.

In Raiding the Closet of the Witch Next Door, I waxed poetic about Whimsigoth, ‘90s clothing nostalgia, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch as an enduring style icon. After diving headfirst into the ‘70s comics to get a sense of her character’s style origins, I just couldn’t stop digging.

So I went on an expedition deep into the comic book archives and excavated some of my favorite looks from her series. Here I lay bare the vintage spoils of my online treasure hunt.

This issue is broken down into six categories: Outerwear, Tops, Bottoms, Dresses, Shoes, and Accessories, respectively. Each set includes some key search terms you can use to find more similar pieces.

Everything listed is vintage, most pieces from the ‘60s and ‘70s, so be sure to add “vintage” and “60s”, “70s” to your search (try “90s” too, as a lot of ‘70s trends experienced revivals in the ‘90s).

Outerwear

If there’s one thing a girl from the Northeast knows how to do, it’s buy a damn good coat. ‘70s outwear had a penchant for fur, shearling, and suede (both real and faux of all three). Though it can be hard to distinguish fabric texture in drawings, it’s clear Sabrina was well versed in these trends.

  1. Pink and burgundy dot patterned white faux fur trimmed coat

  2. Red Y2K era Afghan style coat with pocket detailing and brown faux fur

  3. Deep red Penny Lane coat with white shearling and hood

  4. Cherry red ‘60s mod belted coat with brown faux fur cuffs

  5. Embroidered burgundy suede tan faux fur trimmed Y2K era coat

Key search terms to mix and match: penny lane, afghan, suede, shearling, fur trimmed, fur lined, fur cuffs, fur collar

  1. Cream faux fur jacket with pocket detailing and pearly buttons

  2. White faux fur belted jacket with oversized collar

  3. ‘60s plush white coat with frogged closures and oversized collar

  4. Cream faux fur mutton sleeve zip jacket

Key search terms to mix and match: faux fur, fur, oversized collar, frog toggle, frog closure, mutton sleeve, mod, belted

  1. Nanette Lepore corduroy leopard print coat

  2. French made navy blue faux fur minx coat with waistband

  3. ‘60s cobalt white stitched double breasted rain coat

  4. American made white polka dotted rain jacket

Key search terms to mix and match: blue, navy, cobalt, leopard, polka dots, double breasted, faux fur, belted, rain coat, union made

Tops

Some (me) would argue the short-sleeve sweater is Sabrina’s most important influence on fashion. Her dedication to a knitwear with no arm coverage is astounding. She also regularly reached for button-ups with pointed collars, and in the warmer months she stuck to strappy tanks and halters. The ‘70s looooved a halter top.

  1. Yellow and blue argyle lambswool sweater vest (for layering with your dagger collared shirts)

  2. Rainbow v-neck short-sleeved sweater

  3. Brown, orange, gray striped short sleeve turtleneck

  4. Red and white striped mock neck short-sleeved sweater

Key search terms to mix and match: short-sleeved, sleeveless, turtleneck, mock neck, v-neck, space dyed, heather, waistband, vest, argyle

  1. Green tie-front floral patterned halter top

  2. White lace dotted design halter with button detailing

  3. Western style zip leather vest with star and horseshoe designs

  4. Red gingham reversible halter (the reverse is cherry print!)

  5. Tommy Hilfiger Y2K era denim halter

Key search terms to mix and match: halter, tank top, handmade, tie-front, vest, button front, retro top, reversible
