Your friend A is STRESSING me out. Oh my gosh. That could never ever ever be me

MacKinley Jade's avatar

i do something slightly more sane than your bagless friend: key and phone on a little carabiner that i attach to my waistband and my airpod case on the side of my bra. the medieval belt bag does

sound tempting though

MacKinley Jade's avatar

carabiners are the best but attaching more than my keys to one scares me! you and A are very brave

I just ordered my first ever posture brace and joint supports, very very tempted to try sew a corsetry style fabric on the outside to add maximise my use of lingerie as pockets.

A leather belt bag is definitely high on my list as a way to keep phone/wallet/cards, misc etc out of my pockets. My running belt suits this purpose in some cases but doesn’t often work outside of a gorpy outfit context. Maybe I should lean heavier into the euro-style crossbody bag??

MacKinley Jade's avatar

running belt is so medieval coded

I love the way your brain works!! This was both hilarious and educational... and can I say I'm slightly afraid of A? Truly existing on a freer plane than the rest of us

MacKinley Jade's avatar

no she scares me so bad!!

My friend Melanie has been teaching a workshop on Pocket Politics for the last few years, which I feel would be a perfect accompaniment to your friend’s belt bag making mission. Her project Future Archive is also aptly titled given the multi century spanning you’ve been doing in this essay… loved it! ♥️

Love this! As a pockets-or-dingy-tote-bag gal, I totally get your friend A. I've long been searching for a small, vertically-oriented leather belt bag just big enough for my phones + keys. Looking forward to seeing your recs!

MacKinley Jade's avatar

oooo i’ll keep my eye out for one that matches the description!

I was meh on the Pockets book, wanted her to get more into the politics of them.

A fun examination of waist bags, Mac! I can’t imagine not carrying a bag at all times (I rarely have enough pockets). 💕

Super-fun article, thank you!

MacKinley Jade's avatar

i get that, the politics of pockets are so interesting!!!

Yeah, I kept thinking, “Take a stand!”
