40+ Vintage Picks Straight From “The Parent Trap” (1998)
A very '90s-summer-camp-and-family-wine-vineyard guide to secondhand shopping
My nostalgia for sticky summers spent at sleep-away camp is visceral. I can feel it deep in my bones, that longing and homesickness… The only problem is that I’ve never been to sleep-away camp.
I know sleep-away camp only through the movies I watched growing up — mainly, 1998’s “The Parent Trap,” which takes place at camp for just the first 34 minutes of the film, and yet left an indelible impression that burns inside me hot every summer.
So when I close my eyes and sit in that aching nostalgia of camp summers I never really lived, it’s Hallie’s and Annie’s Camp Walden where I find myself. In visions of pine trees and oak cabins, lake waves lapping at my ankles, sword-fighting a long lost sister — and all the rugged ‘90s styling choices that come with.
The real Camp Walden in Denmark, Maine costs $15,200 tuition for a 7-week summer term. But a vintage Ralph Lauren button-down that rivals Dennis Quaid’s finest will run you $20 on eBay. And you can just imagine you’re horseback for free.
