“Tie” is a loose term, according to Jonathan Anderson, and Ayo Edebiri might be a secret pigeon lady.
The actress and fashion darling walked the 2025 Golden Globes red carpet sporting a tailored Loewe suit styled by Danielle Goldberg — and fitting for the night’s metallic prizes, she adorned the look with an opulent golden feather in place of a necktie.

The styling, auburn-tinged curls included, was an homage to Julia Roberts’ cult classic red carpet look at the 1990 Golden Globes. Julia picked up the men’s suit at the Rodeo Drive Armani boutique, did her hair herself, and tapped a friend for the makeup. She said she chose to wear the suit because she liked it — which is the best reason to wear anything.
Julia’s look had an immediate impact, with the shortly thereafter 1990 Oscars dubbed “The Armani Awards” by Women’s Wear Daily because of how many celebrities donned Giorgio's finest. Following suit, could we perhaps see more gold feathers at this year’s Oscars?
Ayo’s suit, however, is Loewe under the purview of Jonathan Anderson, who showed golden feathers on the runway in his Spring ‘24 menswear collection. Anderson said the “feathers were there to divide our view of the faces beneath them as part of his consideration of forced perspective,” according to Vogue.
Her feather hangs from her neck rather than her forehead, breaking the wall between herself and the viewer, and drawing the eye up to her face — fitting for an actress who can tell a story through the slightest change in facial expression.
Ayo Edebiri has become an undeniable fashion force under the golden wing of celebrity stylist Danielle Goldberg, and this isn’t the first time the duo has paid tribute to a 90s actress on the red carpet. Ayo’s crisp white look for the 2024 Critics Choice Awards was inspired by Whoopi Goldberg.
She told The New York Times that she views dressing with a character in mind as an extension of acting. “I get to be myself,” she said, “but also have this armor of the clothes.”
I loved the playfulness of the Loewe look and I’ll get on board with almost anything Danielle deems worthy, but I could do without the massive tag on the waist. I’m not usually one for big names, logos, and hyper-obvious branding and this is no exception.
The label feels a bit too trying for Ayo, who’s known not only for her acting chops but her quick wit and silly attitude in interviews. Her long-winded monologues in Bottoms were the comedic highlight of the film. A golden feather tie on a tailored suit adds a touch of humor to a traditionally serious look — a perfect balance between the two sides of the people’s princess.
And it’s the thrill of striking a good balance that keeps Ayo coming back to these suited moments: “Playing with masculine silhouettes and subverting the expectations of womenswear is so much fun,” she said in an interview with Elle UK.
I’m personally thankful to know Julia still has that Armani treasure hanging in her closet, and in case you share my desire to pigeon-ify a suit or coat at home, here are some lovely vintage feather brooches I found just for you:

What was your favorite look from the Golden Globes? What’s your top Ayo red carpet look? How would you style a giant golden feather? I’d love to know your thoughts!
i could not love her more. she looks amazing!
Idk why this wasn't my fave of hers!.. I didn't love the gray dress shirt, I feel like the gold feather would've had a bigger moment against a dif underpinning but maybe that's just me. Thought she and hunter Schafer were best dressed at last year's globes in their respective Prada looks, but my fav red carpet look of hers hassss to be the turquoise bottega she wore for inside out 2 premiere. I loove her. Fun read!
